JT Sports Fest’13

JT Sports Fest’13

Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” – Dan Gable

Sports are as integral a part of school life as academics and other extra-curricular activities. Keeping this in mind, the sports society of LGS JT launched what became perhaps the most successful event of the academic year: JT Sports Fest ’13.

With boys and girls from schools like LGS, Beaconhouse, City, LACAS, SICAS and GCU vying for trophies in a bevy of sports ranging from tennis, badminton and snooker to swimming, throw ball and cricket, JT came alive like never before. With each ball that was delivered, with each goal that was scored, the level of adrenaline shot higher and higher into uncharted territory. It was not uncommon to find a student coming to school unaware of the event and then suddenly finding the environment abuzz.

Some stunners and screamers and all that cheering and support provided exquisite scenes. The tears of loss and the screams of victory made the event emotional for not only the competitors, but the spectators as well. Like every competition, there can only be one winner. While LGS JT won the competition, Beaconhouse Defence Campus (BDC) was presented the Best Delegation Trophy, while the Runners-Up award found itself in the hands of Lahore Grammar School Defence.

The event was made possible only through the combined efforts of the management body, headed by Shahrukh Khan Mayo and Omer Khan. The famous – or perhaps – infamous DJ Butt provided the beats that pierced the air, adding to the electric frenzy of the action. With people still talking about it months after it was held, Sports Fest was truly a monumental success.

Grammar Filmfest’13

LGS Johar Town’s Media Society is always ready to take on board new and original concepts. Over the years, it has evolved, all the while seeking to preserve its core values: a passion for cinema and art, the discovery of new talent, and the bringing together of rising entrepreneurs and creative artists from around the country with the aim of competing in one of the most premium events of the year: Grammar Filmfest ’13.

The president and vice-president of the Media Society, Ahmed Hassan and Ayden Aamir, along with a team of capable students (recognizable by their photos against black backgrounds, which became immensely popular during the days leading up to this event), organized the successor to one of JT’s most well-known events, Filmfest ’12, on the 8th of October, 2013. And boy, did they pull it off.

With Mr. Bilal Lashari, the famous director, playing the role of chief guest, Filmfest brought together films of all categories – photography, shorts, advertisements, music videos and documentaries – in a night which saw the auditorium filled to capacity. With topics ranging from ‘Pappu, yaar, tang na kar’ to Patriotism, the possibilities were endless. This was reflected in the wide variety of movies that were shown. And once again, DJ Butt made his presence known. Parbat Foundation’s charity box also found its place on the basketball court with people donating for a noble cause.

As was expected, the management and participants came through to produce a successful event, living up to the name that is Grammar Filmfest.

Mosum’14

Mosum’14

Mosum is the flagship event of the Punjnad Environmental society. It offers a variety of competitions from science to the environment to arts. Its aim is to get students to acknowledge the widespread devastation of the environment around us and to propose ways in which we could stop further deterioration of the environment and bring about a change for the better.

Mosum 14 consisted of several events. The compulsory events, which all teams had to participate in, were the environmental moot and environmental summit. Other events included the green quiz, junk art, documentary, advertisement making, graffiti and still life. Teams had to choose any two from this list. Social events included the Envi-Rally (a scavenger hunt), the much enjoyed gig night and the formal dinner.

The event, as always, was managed by JT’s own students, under the leadership of Punjnad’s heads, Ali Rabab and Ahmed Amin. Their efforts made it possible to organize a competition of such magnitude efficiently. Like every event, Mosum may have had its faults, but it was nonetheless a success.

Grammar Aid II

Grammar Aid II

On the 26th of October, 2013, LGS JT and FS Events & PR came together to organize one of the biggest concerts in the history of the school – Grammar Aid II. This wasn’t just a concert, though – It was a joint venture of various societies of the school aimed at community service.

The event brought together people from all over the city and even further beyond under one (figurative) roof. The event was headlined by one of the country’s most well-known musicians – Ali Azmat. Aside from him, artists such as Alina Najam Butt, Three Musketeers and Moen Jo Daro set fire to the night with surreal performances. Dance performances, stand-up comedy and food stalls combined to make the concert into a mega-event. At this time, JT was the place to be at.

As is obvious from the name, the event was organized to aid the victims of the Sindh earthquake. The utilization of the funds was handled by the NGO Naya Sawera, who had been working for the cause for a long time. Seeing people come together to help their brothers and sisters in need was truly delighting.

Hats off to the whole team, especially Basit Khatana (Event Organiser), Shayan Ali Khokhar and Raza Ahmed (Event Managers). Such a huge concert can only be pulled off through sheer determination and teamwork – attributes which we are not short of at JT.

TEDxYouth@JT

“Ideas Worth Spreading”

The Allama Iqbal Thinkers Forum of Lahore Grammar School Johar Town organized its second TEDxYouth@JT on November 17th, 2013. TEDxYouth@JT is an interdisciplinary conference annually held at JT on the International TEDxYouth Day, discussing a range of socially relevant topics, spoken on by a range of guest speakers from various professions and walks of life. The aim of this event is to bring a plethora of different topics under discussion on one forum and thus gather unconventional viewpoints and perspectives on them.

The speakers at TEDxYouth@JT may not all have been from the youth, but the event was definitely for the youth, with this year’s theme being ‘Youth Activism’. The speakers at the 2013 event included Mr. Jazib Tahir (Chief Operations Officer of Tintash (Pvt) Ltd), Ms. Hina Jillani (Human Rights Activist, Zara Shahjahan (Fashion Designer) and Sher Ali Khan (Journalist), but the undoubted star of the show was the renowned journalist Mr. Najam Sethi.

The team of TEDxYouth@JT centered the conference around the notion of introducing Pakistan’s Youth to a closer look at society because it – the youth – will ultimately inherit the nation’s problems, successes, hopes and dreams. Without prior exposure to the experience of those who have shouldered this burden, it is not possible to press on.

Credit for managing to pull of the event which attracted people from far and wide goes to the president of the Thinkers Forum, Faseeh Irfan, among others whose hard work brought things to a point where TEDxYouth@JT was trending on Twitter! Hats off to the host team!
